Abstract
The article discusses the Hôtel de la Paix, a modernist hotel located on the seafront of Lomé, Togo, which symbolizes both the optimism of the postcolonial era and the subsequent decline of the nation. Built between 1972 and 1975, the hotel was part of a government initiative to promote tourism and economic growth following Togo's independence from France. However, due to economic challenges and mismanagement, the hotel closed in 2006 and has since fallen into disrepair, with only its concrete structure remaining. Despite its dilapidated state, the hotel continues to hold cultural significance, inspiring local artists and communities, and proposals for its repurposing as an educational hub or public space have emerged, reflecting a desire to preserve its historical legacy while adapting to contemporary needs.
