Abstract

Since taking office in 2010, the UK's ruling Conservative Party has overseen a period of lagging living standards compared to other wealthy nations. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, household disposable incomes only grew by 5.9% between 2009-10 and 2022-23, well below the expected 30% growth. The National Institute of Economic and Social Research also found that living standards fell by 7% during the current parliamentary term, one of the worst declines on record. The UK's poor performance in terms of living standards can be attributed to factors such as inflation spikes, crises like Brexit, and problematic budget plans. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces the challenge of winning back voters ahead of the upcoming general election. The UK has slipped down the international rankings for growth in disposable incomes, falling from one of the best performers to one of the worst. The analysis also reveals slow progress in reducing absolute poverty. The bottom 40% of households are not expected to recover pre-pandemic living standards until 2028. [Extracted from the article]
