Abstract

This article critically engages with Richard Cross’s book *Communicatio Idiomatum. Reformation Christological Debates*, focusing on Martin Luther’s Christology and theological methodology. It highlights four key issues somewhat underexplored by Cross: Luther’s complex view of philosophy, his critique of scholasticism and dialectical logic, his preference for grammatica (rhetorical skill) and figures of speech over formal logic, and his innovative understanding of Christology. The article questions whether Cross’s portrayal fully captures Luther’s theological thought, especially regarding Luther’s emphasis on Scripture and language use, and tentatively challenges the notion that Luther initiated Lutheran scholasticism, suggesting later developments may diverge from Luther’s original Christological insights.
