Abstract
At every Divine Liturgy, Christians worldwide recite the NiceneConstantinopolitan Creed as a confession of faith. While most are unfamiliar with the details and doctrinal controversies that led to the composition of this profession of faith, they are aware that the First Council of Nicaea was a defining moment in the history of Christianity. It was also a moment that established Christian doctrine in its correct form, according to Holy Scripture and through the precise, Spirit-inspired formulations of the Holy Fathers. For scholars, the First Ecumenical Council has long been a subject of multidisciplinary interest and continues to fascinate and inspire research, not only in theology but across various academic fields. The commemoration of 1700 years since this foundational event in the history of the Church is not merely a ceremonial occasion, but an opportunity for a critical and in-depth reassessment—through the lens of modern research tools—of its dogmatic, canonical, and liturgical implications. Regarding the date of Easter, we have examined both scriptural and patristic texts that address this subject. The scriptural foundations underlie the Christian celebration of Easter. However, various opinions and practices concerning the calculation of the date of Easter existed even before the First Council of Nicaea; these differences formed the context that led to the discussions of the Holy Fathers at the First Ecumenical Council concerning the celebration of the Paschal feast.
