Abstract

The article explores diverse personal perspectives on prayer from Christian and Muslim practitioners, highlighting its multifaceted nature as both a discipline and a form of spiritual communication. Clare Davison, a United Reformed Church (URC) minister, describes prayer as a two-way conversation involving set prayers, extemporary prayer, music, dance, and attentive listening to God's presence. Carla Grosch-Miller, also a URC minister and theologian, emphasizes prayer as presence and attentiveness, shaped by life experiences and expressed beyond words. St Theophan the Recluse, a 19th-century Russian Orthodox monk and bishop, outlines prayer as invoking reverence and understanding each word deeply to cultivate a prayerful spirit. Anjum Anwar, a Muslim teacher, explains the five daily prescribed prayers (salah or salat) performed with specific rituals and personal prayers (duas) offered anytime for guidance and protection, underscoring prayer as a command from God and a source of discipline and comfort. The article also includes a reflective personal narrative on grief and prayer's role in healing and connection.
