Abstract
The article examines the controversial 1916 marriage between Ethel Squire, a Protestant teacher, and Maurice O'Connor, a Catholic railway worker, against her family's objections. Topics include early 20th century anti-Irish and anti-Catholic prejudice in New Zealand, the couple's defiance of social norms; and the lasting family estrangement caused by religious and cultural divisions.
