Abstract

The article explores the historical and cultural significance of masks across various traditions and time periods. It highlights the long-standing practice of mask-wearing in Venice during Carnevale, where masks allowed individuals to transcend social norms and engage in revelry. The article also discusses the famous funerary mask of Tutankhamun, crafted from gold and semi-precious stones, which served to aid the deceased in the afterlife. Additionally, it examines the use of masks in Indigenous Northwest Coast ceremonies for storytelling and transformation, the protective role of masks during the Black Death, and their function in Japanese Noh theatre, where they convey character emotions through subtle actor movements.
