Abstract
The article focuses on how 1960s San Francisco, California often remembered for gay liberation, also became the unexpected birthplace of the modern ex-gay and conversion-therapy movement. Topics include Kent Philpott's fusion of conservative Christianity with psychological language to justify "ex-gay" counselling, the emergence and spread of early conversion-therapy groups such as Love in Action, and the movement's later evolution, controversies, and eventual repudiation.
