Abstract
This article focuses on enhancing oncology nurses' cultural knowledge, sensitivity, and humility when caring for Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) populations, who face unique health disparities rooted in historical trauma and colonization. It reviews the history and cultural context of NHOPI peoples, highlights their increased vulnerability to cancer and other health conditions, and discusses the impact of recent natural disasters on their well-being. The article emphasizes the application of the theory of modeling and role-modeling, which encourages nurses to understand and respect patients' cultural experiences and trauma to provide holistic, person-centered care. Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in oncology nursing is presented as essential to addressing healthcare inequities and improving outcomes for NHOPI patients.
