Abstract

Confraternities were a vital part of early modern Catholicism, and their records provide a unique vantage point from which to view the religious lives of the laity. In I Charity for and by the Poor i , Laura Dierksmeier compellingly inserts the Franciscan-Indigenous confraternities of early modern Mexico into the rich field of confraternity studies. The book presents these Franciscan-Indigenous confraternities as egalitarian sites: women and men, rich and poor, indigenous, creole and Afro-Mexican interacted in these confraternities on a relatively level field.
