Abstract

The article reflects on the concept of the Sabbath as a day of rest and its implications for social and economic equity. It highlights how the Sabbath, traditionally observed as a joyful day without work, can represent a privilege inaccessible to daily laborers who must work to secure their next meal. Drawing on a Dalit scholar's perspective, the article challenges conventional judgments about working on the Sabbath and emphasizes that true rest depends on having sufficient material resources. It calls for rethinking religious practices like prayer, fasting, and almsgiving during the Lenten season to focus on creating just and equitable societies where no one is deprived of basic necessities.
