Abstract

The article focuses on the role of traditional Rwandan musical instruments, such as the inanga (a trough-zither), impuruza and indamutsa drums, umuduri, and endingidi, in conveying age-old tales of morality, social discipline, and animal conservation. It highlights musicians in Musanze who continue these traditions, including former poachers now advocating for gorilla conservation through the Gorilla Guardians Village project, which supports the protection of mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. The music, often performed in Kinyarwanda, serves both cultural storytelling and moral instruction, while contemporary adaptations see female musicians increasingly participating alongside traditional male performers.
