Abstract

This article examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in health coaching, particularly for mental health services, highlighting both their potential benefits and limitations. It discusses how AI bots can apply psychological principles such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing but lack lived human experience, raising philosophical questions about their role and ethical design. The article references ancient philosophical debates, such as Stoicism and Epicureanism, to illustrate challenges in programming AI to reflect diverse human values. It also summarizes insights from a 2025 Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO) Think Tank, emphasizing the importance of human oversight, ethical standards, privacy, equity, and employer roles in responsibly integrating AI into mental health care.
