Abstract

This article examines the complex relationship between the residents of Agüita de la Perdiz, an irregular urban settlement in Concepción, Chile, and Cerro Caracol, an urban biodiversity hotspot and site of the Metropolitan Park. It explores how the community’s biocultural practices and customary uses of the hill’s forest, waters, and fauna have historically shaped their livelihood and identity, while also highlighting conflicts arising from territorial dispossession, park regulations, and private land ownership. The study emphasizes the need for inclusive governance and co-management approaches that recognize local knowledge and rights, aiming to reconcile conservation goals with the community’s socio-environmental practices and foster environmental justice.
