Abstract

This article focuses on a scoping review conducted by researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong examining strategies to reduce inappropriate antipsychotic use in long-term care (LTC) settings. The review identifies three effective non-pharmacological approaches—person-centred care and environmental adaptation, medication review and monitoring, and regulatory measures—with education and training as a cross-cutting element. Key barriers to implementation include resistance from staff and families, poor communication, and staffing challenges, while facilitators involve cultural shifts, team cohesion, and enhanced training. The findings emphasize the need for integrated clinical, organizational, and educational strategies that engage staff, families, and leadership to improve quality of life for LTC residents.
