Abstract

Four Cameroonian soldiers were killed in an IED blast in the country's Far North region while conducting an operation against Boko Haram. The region, which borders the Lake Chad basin, is frequently targeted by the Nigerian jihadist group. In a separate incident, seventeen people, including a top businessman and an ex-secret service chief, will stand trial for the killing of a journalist known for criticizing alleged corruption and cronyism in Cameroon. The regime of President Paul Biya, who has ruled for over 41 years, is accused of routinely curbing opposition and press freedom. [Extracted from the article]
