Abstract
The article focuses on the resistance and violence during the early colonial period in Sydney, highlighting Aboriginal peoples’ armed opposition to British colonisation from 1788 to the early 1800s. It details how Aboriginal warriors, such as Pemulwuy, actively defended their lands through guerrilla warfare and raids, prompting harsh military reprisals and massacres by colonial forces and settlers. The narrative emphasizes that colonial violence was often a response to perceived threats and challenges to settler authority rather than an expression of uncontested power. Key events include the smallpox epidemic known as galgala, the Battle of Parramatta, and the Appin Massacre, illustrating a cycle of Aboriginal resistance met with escalating colonial violence. The article argues for the importance of acknowledging these foundational conflicts in Australian history while sensitively addressing their complexity in educational contexts.
