Abstract
The article focuses on the collaboration between the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) and Seiko Epson Corporation to develop a new regenerated cellulose fiber that mimics silk, derived from discarded cotton clothing. This initiative, which began in early 2024, aims to address the growing issue of textile waste, particularly in Europe, by utilizing recycled fibers. The innovative production process involves defibrating old cotton fabric, dissolving it, and extruding it into a solidified fiber, resulting in a material that combines the durability of cotton with the luxurious qualities of silk.
