Altered Lignin Accumulation in Sorghum Mutated in Silicon Uptake Transporter SbLsi1.

Abstract

This article focuses on the effects of a mutation in the sorghum silicon (Si) uptake transporter gene SbLsi1 on lignin accumulation and cell wall composition in the model sorghum variety BTx623. The mutation significantly reduced Si content in leaves and stems of soil-grown plants while increasing lignin accumulation in leaves, as demonstrated by chemical and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses. Upregulation of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis-related genes in mutant seedlings suggests transcriptional regulation contributes to enhanced lignin deposition. These findings indicate an inverse relationship between Si content and lignin accumulation in sorghum leaves and provide insights for developing sorghum cultivars with high biomass and reduced Si content to improve biomass energy feedstock quality.
