Abstract

The article focuses on French Polynesia's announcement of the world's largest Marine Protected Area (MPA), covering its entire exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of nearly 5 million square kilometers. This MPA restricts extractive activities such as deep-sea mining and bottom-trawling, with 1.1 million square kilometers designated as highly or fully protected under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) standards, allowing only traditional fishing, ecotourism, and scientific research. The initiative builds on previous conservation efforts and aims to enhance marine biodiversity protection and climate change adaptation. The article also highlights the broader global challenge of expanding MPAs to meet international ocean protection goals and emphasizes the need for international cooperation to enforce these protections effectively.
