Abstract
This article reports on a peer-reviewed study from Sichuan University in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, examining sleep disturbances across clinical stages of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Using a network meta-analysis of self-reported and objectively measured sleep data, researchers found that sleep abnormalities, such as decreased sleep efficiency and reduced rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, are present in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and become more pronounced in AD dementia, while decreased slow wave sleep (SWS) appears only in AD dementia. The study suggests that interventions targeting improvements in total sleep time, SWS, and REM sleep, especially when applied early in the disease process, may help slow AD progression.
