Abstract

The article focuses on the development of afrofemtrism, a critical African feminist theory designed to analyze gender realities within the sociotechnical context of blockchain technology adoption in Ghana. Afrofemtrism addresses gaps in existing technology and society studies by incorporating African histories, cultures, and power dynamics, emphasizing the intersection of gender, culture, and technology in the Global South. Based on qualitative interviews with Ghanaian blockchain enthusiasts, the theory highlights how sociocultural factors, national conditions, and transnational influences shape gendered experiences and inequalities in the blockchain ecosystem, where men dominate technical roles and women face both overt and covert barriers. Afrofemtrism aims to advance gender justice by critically interrogating and disrupting patriarchal structures embedded in technological innovation and participation.
