Abstract
The article focuses on James Greenhalgh CITP’s integration of his software development expertise and passion for scuba diving to support marine conservation through the Reef-World Foundation’s Green Fins programme. Greenhalgh developed the Green Fins Hub, a mobile-first digital platform that enables dive tourism operators worldwide to assess and reduce their environmental impact, particularly on coral reefs, by following a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)-endorsed Code of Conduct. The platform facilitates self-assessment, generates environmental performance scores, and fosters global collaboration among operators and experts to address local threats from tourism, complementing efforts to combat broader issues like climate change. Reef-World emphasizes sustainable and ethical operations, ensuring its digital infrastructure is carbon neutral while focusing its limited resources on mitigating tourism-related reef damage rather than broader issues like sustainable fishing.
