Abstract

Southern Africa is experiencing a severe drought, with large parts of Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe receiving the least rainfall in decades. This drought, attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon, is causing crop failures, a power shortage, and rising food prices. The drought is expected to have devastating consequences, with President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia declaring it a national disaster. The region's reliance on hydropower is also being affected, with water levels in the Zambezi River and Kariba Lake significantly lower than usual. The drought is a result of climate change, despite Africa producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions than developed regions. [Extracted from the article]
