Abstract
The article focuses on the recent confirmation of human Nipah virus (NiV) cases in West Bengal, India, highlighting global challenges in preparedness for high-impact zoonotic diseases. NiV, a zoonotic paramyxovirus transmitted primarily from fruit bats to humans and through close contact, has a high fatality rate of 40 to 75% and currently lacks licensed vaccines or specific treatments. The two confirmed cases, both health care workers, led to rapid containment efforts and heightened surveillance in several Asian countries, reflecting ongoing concerns about emerging infectious threats. The article emphasizes systemic issues such as inconsistent surveillance, limited international data sharing, and insufficient investment in research and development, calling for strengthened One Health approaches and accelerated countermeasure development to improve pandemic preparedness.
