Abstract

Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique was severely impacted by decades of civil war and poaching, leading to dramatic declines in wildlife populations. Since the early 2000s, restoration initiatives have aimed to rebuild both ecosystems and human-wildlife relationships. This review evaluates conservation efforts in Gorongosa by reviewing peer-reviewed literature published between 2015 and 2022, supplemented by secondary sources such as documentaries and news articles. Key areas examined include herbivore recovery, species reintroductions (e.g., African wild dog), management of elephant-human conflict, and lion conservation. Results indicate that conservation interventions have been broadly successful in restoring wildlife populations and ecosystem function, while also providing benefits for surrounding human communities. Gorongosa offers an important case study of integrated conservation that combines ecological restoration with social engagement. The progress in Gorongosa hopefully will inspire similar conservation projects in different parts of the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
