Abstract
This article focuses on Stanford University researchers’ development and testing of an AI-based control system for Astrobee, NASA’s free-flying robotic platform aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The system uses machine learning to provide a "warm start" for Astrobee’s autonomous navigation, significantly speeding up motion planning by 50 to 60 percent while maintaining safety in the ISS’s complex environment. Tested both on Earth at NASA’s Ames Research Center and in orbit, this advancement achieved NASA Technology Readiness Level 5, indicating successful operation in a real space environment.
