Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) explores the relationship between the perception of object shadows and body shadows. The study involved 38 participants who were immersed in a virtual reality environment and asked to indicate the coincidence between the movement of a ball shadow and the movement of the ball, as well as the coincidence between their body shadow and their body position in space. Brain activity was recorded using an EEG system, and the results showed that beta oscillations in specific brain areas were associated with the perception of object shadows and body shadows. The findings suggest that the perception of body shadows can be predicted from object shadows, and that certain neural activity patterns are involved in encoding and inferring body shadow representation.
