Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the oral bioavailability and anti-arthritic effects of copaiba essential oil (CEO) delivered via a self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS), termed FSNEDDS, in a rat model of rheumatoid arthritis induced by Freund's adjuvant. The study found that FSNEDDS increased the oral bioavailability of CEO’s main component, β-caryophyllene, by over threefold compared to non-formulated CEO, enabling effective reduction of joint and systemic inflammation and oxidative stress at lower doses without inducing hepatotoxicity. Unlike non-formulated CEO and copaiba balsam, FSNEDDS did not alter liver morphology, gluconeogenesis, or serum markers of liver damage in healthy rats. These findings suggest that CEO carried in FSNEDDS may represent a safer phytotherapeutic alternative for rheumatoid arthritis treatment.
