Abstract

This article focuses on the development of the first ultrathin, compact metalens telescope by a Penn State University research team, capable of imaging distant objects such as the Moon. Metalenses use nanoscale antenna-like patterns to focus light on a flat surface, replacing the bulky curved glass lenses of traditional telescopes. To scale the metalens to 8 cm in diameter, the researchers adapted deep ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography—a high-throughput chip fabrication method—combined with a novel rotating wafer and stitching process to efficiently pattern large areas. The resulting metalens telescope achieved high-resolution lunar imaging, though challenges like chromatic aberration remain to be addressed before broader application in modern cameras.
