Abstract

The article focuses on the evolving relationship between functions and scientific calculators in secondary school mathematics education, particularly highlighting the recent inclusion of function-defining capabilities in calculators like the CASIO fx-8200 AU Classwiz. It outlines how functions have become central to the Australian Curriculum and describes how scientific calculators, traditionally viewed as computational tools, now support deeper mathematical understanding through representation, exploration, and affirmation of functions. Examples demonstrate how students can define, evaluate, tabulate, and compose functions on calculators, facilitating dynamic learning of concepts such as linearity, quadratic behavior, equivalence, sequences, and solving equations. The article emphasizes that these enhanced calculator functionalities offer significant educational benefits beyond mere calculation, aiding students' conceptual engagement with functions.
