Abstract

This article focuses on assessing the demand and willingness to pay (WTP) for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine among mothers of adolescent daughters in Gurgaon, India. The study found that while 79% of the 319 surveyed mothers were willing to pay for the vaccine, the mean maximum WTP (INR 629 or USD 35) was substantially lower than the market price (INR 2000–3000 or USD 117–175 per dose). Demand and WTP were influenced by factors such as family income, participant age, number of children, and awareness of cervical cancer, which was generally low. The findings suggest that reducing vaccine prices, increasing awareness, and subsidizing costs for those unable to pay are important strategies to improve HPV vaccine uptake in India.
