Abstract
This article examines current educational degree preferences among forensic science hiring officials for entry-level and supervisory positions, updating surveys last conducted in 1986 and 1996. Based on a 2021 survey of 221 members from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) and the Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT), results show a continued preference for candidates holding a master's degree in forensic science combined with a bachelor's degree in physical or biological sciences. While the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) accredits forensic science programs, most respondents (66%) reported not considering accreditation status in hiring decisions. The findings suggest stable hiring preferences over time despite the growth of accredited forensic science educational programs.
