Abstract

The article focuses on research regarding the experiences of older mental health service users attending community-based day centres (DCs) as they transition into retirement age. Conducted by researchers from Lund University, the study involved interviews with fourteen older DC attendees over four and a half years, revealing that participation in DCs helps maintain a sense of belonging and occupational identity despite the challenges of ageing with severe mental illness. The findings highlight the importance of enablers that facilitate social connections and support daily activities, suggesting that such insights can inform better planning for support services aimed at this demographic.
