Abstract
The article focuses on Guru Madhavan's book *Wicked Problems*, which encourages engineers and non-engineers to adopt holistic and reflective approaches to complex sociotechnical challenges by reframing problems rather than rushing to solutions. Madhavan uses a taxonomy of problem types—"hard," "soft," "messy," and "wicked"—to guide readers in developing critical thinking and ethical imagination, illustrated through historical events and the story of inventor Edwin Link's flight simulators. The book also highlights the often-overlooked importance of maintenance in technology, aligning with ongoing discussions in science and technology studies. While the book broadens access to sociotechnical analysis, the article notes missed opportunities to more deeply engage with power dynamics and historical contexts, such as anti-racist perspectives and organizational behavior insights.
