Abstract

A recent volcanic eruption on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula has captured attention with dramatic images and videos, but it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the planet's climate. While volcanic eruptions can temporarily cool the Earth by releasing ash and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, this eruption is not expected to generate a large ash cloud. The magma composition and relatively small size of the eruption mean that it is unlikely to release enough greenhouse gases to cause warming. Therefore, the eruption will not provide relief from global warming, which is primarily driven by human emissions and other natural phenomena like El Niño. [Extracted from the article]
