Abstract
The article focuses on the 2024 Investing in African Mining Indaba held in Cape Town, which gathered over 10,000 delegates from 115 countries to discuss the future of African mining, particularly its role in supplying critical minerals like copper, cobalt, nickel, and lithium for the green energy transition. Despite high attendance and optimistic themes such as "beneficiation" and "adding value," the industry remains largely extractive, with limited refining and processing occurring within Africa due to logistical, power, regulatory, and financing challenges. Key infrastructure projects like the US$2 billion Lobito corridor linking Angola, Zambia, and DR Congo, and the China-backed Tazara railway rehabilitation, highlight efforts to improve export routes, though questions remain about where ore will ultimately be refined. Additionally, geopolitical factors, including US tariffs on Chinese goods and differing views on coal's role in energy, add complexity to the continent's mining prospects.
