Abstract

Its Snake River basin once supported nearly 50% of the Chinook Salmon and steelhead in the entire Columbia River basin. Scientific studies continue to show that breaching the four lower Snake River dams would provide greater certainty of achieving long-term survival and recovery of native wild fishes more than any other measure or combination of measures without dam breaching. Between 1961 and 1975, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed four dams on the lower Snake blocking the fish from vast high-quality spawning and nursery habitat and altering habitat to the detriment of the fish.
