Abstract

A Colorado pilot program seeks to ease a system logjam that occurs when an accused offender with mental health needs is deemed not competent to stand trial but has no viable alternative to a long hold in jail. Launched last July, the initiative uses an education program designed to expedite an individual's restoration to competency, an effort that in many cases has shortened defendants' court‐mandated stay in psychiatric care.
