Abstract

The article focuses on a novel approach to introductory physics labs that enhances scientific authenticity by introducing a new, nonstandard unit of length called the "aubin" (aub), which masks the known value of the acceleration due to gravity (g) from students. Using specially constructed rulers marked in aubins, students measure free-fall acceleration without prior knowledge of the expected result, motivating detailed error analysis and collaboration. The lab includes a two-week sequence: initial data collection using a spark generator and aub rulers, followed by a class "conference" where students compare results using statistical tools like the t′-score to reach a consensus value for g in aub/s². This method encourages critical thinking, peer interaction, and mimics the scientific process of consensus-building, with potential applications in other measurements and units to foster deeper engagement in physics experimentation.
