Abstract
This article focuses on a pilot study evaluating alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in damaged tooth extraction sockets using a synthetic bone block (SBB) composed of biphasic calcium phosphate. Four patients with extensive socket wall damage underwent socket augmentation with SBB and a collagen membrane, with dimensional stability assessed via intraoral and CBCT scans at baseline, immediately postoperative, and six months postoperative. Results showed minimal horizontal and vertical ridge shrinkage (<1 mm and <1%, respectively) and well-maintained soft tissue profiles over six months. Synchrotron imaging of biopsy samples revealed low to moderate new bone formation (approximately 16%), with residual biomaterial and nonmineralized tissue comprising the remainder. The study concludes that SBB may be a viable option for ARP in damaged sockets, though further long-term randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm implant survival and bone quality outcomes.
