Abstract

This article focuses on validating breast volumetry using three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging as a method to assess breast volume and shape in reconstructive surgery after mastectomy. The study compared preoperative breast volume measurements obtained via analog anthropometry (Breast-V), digital 3D imaging software (Breast Sculptor and Vectra Analysis Module, VAM), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) against the gold standard of intraoperative water displacement volumetry of mastectomy specimens in 25 patients (34 specimens). Results showed that 3D surface imaging methods, particularly Breast Sculptor, demonstrated acceptable accuracy, reproducibility, and reliability comparable to MRI, while analog measurements were less precise. The findings support 3D surface imaging as a quick and effective tool for planning breast reconstruction and improving surgical outcomes.
