Abstract

This article introduces the interdisciplinary study of Hellenistic aesthetics, emphasizing its diversity and contested nature across literary studies, philosophy, and art history. It highlights recent scholarship that challenges earlier views of Hellenistic poetry and art as purely autonomous or decorative, instead situating them within complex social, cultural, and material contexts. The volume aims to foster dialogue among disciplines by exploring themes such as materiality, aesthetic plurality, and the social embeddedness of artistic production and reception, illustrated through case studies including precious stones and their aesthetic significance. Contributions address topics ranging from poetic form and philosophical reflections on music to the interplay of literature and visual arts, as well as Roman receptions of Hellenistic aesthetics, collectively advancing new frameworks for understanding this multifaceted field.
