What Did James Watt Really Invent?

Abstract
This article focuses on James Watt's key contribution to the development of the steam engine: the invention of the external condenser. It explains that earlier steam engines, such as Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine patented in 1712, were inefficient due to repeated heating and cooling of the cylinder. Watt improved this design in 1767 by introducing a separate condenser that allowed the cylinder to remain hot, significantly reducing fuel consumption. The article also notes later advancements, including Richard Trevithick's high-pressure steam engine and the development of compound engines, while distinguishing Watt's condenser from these subsequent innovations.
