Abstract

The article focuses on recent developments in U.S. military AI use, nuclear weapons modernization, and missile defense deployments. It reports that the AI company Anthropic has been barred from U.S. military contracts due to its refusal to work on autonomous weapons, with other firms like OpenAI taking over. Concerns are raised about the risks of automation bias in AI-assisted targeting, highlighted by a deadly missile strike in Iran linked to outdated intelligence rather than AI error. The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is accelerating nuclear weapons design and production through a new rapid capabilities program, with increased funding proposed for fiscal year 2027 and plans to expand plutonium pit production. Additionally, the U.S. is relocating missile defense interceptors from South Korea to the Middle East to address threats from Iranian missile strikes, amid ongoing efforts to increase interceptor production.
