Biomechanically Informed Bowing: Revisiting Rolland's Principles of Violin Playing.

Abstract

This article revisits the biomechanical concepts of Paul Rolland (1911–1978), a prominent American violinist and pedagogue, to propose a synthesized framework of his underlying principles of violin bowing. Rolland's approach emphasizes a holistic understanding of the whole body's biomechanics in relation to individual body parts, focusing on three interrelated concepts: whole body action, movement (notably rotary arm motions), and balance (including bow hold, leverage, and finger placement). His research, including the Illinois String Research Project, demonstrated that integrating these concepts facilitates natural, efficient bowing that enhances tone quality, technical skill acquisition, and musical expression. The article underscores Rolland's influence on string pedagogy and advocates for biomechanically informed teaching methods that promote tension-free playing and long-term physical health for string players.
