Abstract

The article examines how feminist security studies (FSS) can enrich cybersecurity by applying a gendered, intersectional lens to reveal overlooked violences and insecurities in cyberspace. It critiques traditional state-centric and militarized cybersecurity approaches for neglecting the diverse experiences of marginalized groups and challenges simplistic human rights protectionism that may reinforce existing hierarchies. The authors advocate for inclusive cybersecurity policy-making that prioritizes ordinary people’s security, equitable internet access, and diverse representation, emphasizing demilitarization and participatory governance. Drawing on FSS concepts such as intersectionality and expanded notions of violence and security, the article calls for transformative international cooperation that centers marginalized voices and addresses cyber-based harms like gender-based violence, disinformation, and surveillance.
