Abstract

This study investigates whether the mechanism of injury influences the initial response to concussion in older adults aged 50 to 84. Fifty participants from a sports medicine concussion clinic were grouped into motor vehicle accident (MVA) and non-MVA categories, with assessments including Vestibular/Ocular-Motor Screening (VOMS), Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT), and Concussion Clinical Profile Screening (CP Screen). Results showed that while overall response severity did not differ between groups, those with MVA-related concussions reported more severe vestibular and cognitive symptoms and performed worse on visual memory, reaction time, and visual motor speed tasks. The findings suggest that concussions from MVAs may cause more specific vestibular and cognitive impairments in older adults, highlighting the need for further research on concussion presentation in this population.
