Abstract

This article focuses on systemic symptoms associated with breast implants (SSBI) and the presence of silicone particles in periprosthetic capsules. The study analyzed capsules from saline and silicone breast implants in Canada, finding nearly one million silicone particles in capsules surrounding silicone gel implants but none in those around saline implants. Despite the presence of silicone particles in silicone implant capsules, data from this and related studies indicate that silicone leakage is unlikely to cause the systemic symptoms reported by patients with breast implants. The findings suggest that SSBI is a complex condition not solely attributable to silicone exposure, highlighting the need for further research into alternative causes.
