Subspecies at crossroads: the evolutionary significance of genomic and phenotypic variation in a wide-ranging Australian lizard (Ctenotus pantherinus).

Abstract

This article examines whether the four morphologically defined subspecies of the widespread Australian lizard *Ctenotus pantherinus* correspond to distinct and coherent evolutionary lineages. Through extensive morphological assessments and analyses of mitochondrial and genome-wide nuclear genetic data, the study finds weak and inconsistent support for the traditional subspecies designations, revealing broad morphological overlap, paraphyly of subspecies in phylogenies, mitonuclear discordance, and evidence of genetic admixture across regions. The findings highlight challenges in applying the subspecies concept, particularly when based solely on morphology, and argue that the historically proposed subspecies in *C. pantherinus* lack clear evolutionary distinctiveness. Consequently, the authors recommend synonymizing the named subspecies under *Ctenotus pantherinus* and emphasize the broader taxonomic and conservation implications of recognizing subspecies that do not reflect independently evolving lineages.
